1st World Irrigation Forum (WIF) & 64th IEC Meeting of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), Mardin, Turkey

 

1st World Irrigation Forum (WIF) and 64th IEC meeting of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) held at Mardin, Turkey from 29th September to 5th October, 2013. 750 participants from 61 Countries and 12 International Organizations attended the Forum. Program was divided into two parts, WIF and ICID International Executive Council (IEC) meeting. Er. Kamal Prasad Regmi, JS, MoI, Er. Shiv Kumar Sharma, DG, DoI, Er. Uttam Raj Timilsina, DDG, DoI, Er. Abdhesh Chandra Jha, Project Director, Rani Jamara Kuleriya Irrigation Project, Er. Ezee GC, DoI and Er. Suman Sijapati, President, INPIM participated in the event from Nepal.

The World Irrigation Forum aimed to bring together all the stakeholders involved in irrigation of multi-disciplines and all scales, including the policy makers, experts, research institutions, non-governmental organizations and farmers. It provided a platform for the world irrigation community and interested development professionals to find solutions to problems plaguing the irrigated agriculture, in time of depleting freshwater resources as a result of global warming and climate change. Main theme of WIF was “The Irrigation and Drainage in a Changing World: Challenges and Opportunities for Global Food Security”.

Within the context of the main theme, more than 186 papers, short communications and posters were presented and discussed under three sub-themes : 1. Policy, Science and Society Interactions; 2)Challenges and Development in Financing Irrigation and Drainage Sector; 3) Integrated Water Management Approaches for Sustainable Food Production. In addition to the thematic sessions, there were: 1) three workshops on Water Wisdom and Sustainability, Developing Management Strategies for Coping with Drought and Water Scarcity and Management of Water, Crops and Soils under Climate              Changes ; 2)Two round tables : Policy , Stakeholders ; 3) Two panel Discussion : Farmers, Industry ; 4)23 Side Events and 5) an exhibition.
